Item Description:

  • Origin: United States of America, series 1934A
  • Date: 1942 - 1944
  • Denomination: 5 dollars
  • Size: 6 x 2.6 inches
  • Face Side: Portrait of Abraham Lincoln at center, Treasurer's signature and 5 at left, Secretary's signature and Treasury Seal to right.
  • Back Side: Lincoln Memorial at center.
  • Notes: North African Notes were a special series of silver certificates issued by the U.S. during World War II (1942–1944) specifically for use in the North African theater. They came in denominations of $1, $5, and $10, and had a distinctive yellow seal (instead of the usual blue) so that they could be clearly distinguished from regular currency. The idea was that if the Germans recaptured territory, these notes could be invalidated, making them worthless to the enemy. They were exclusively used for military payroll. Though their series dates were from the 1930s, these notes were actually issued in the 1940s.
