These bronze coins are from Maroneia, an ancient Greek city that was famous for its wine production. The obverse shows the head of Dionysus, the god of wine, and the reverse shows Dionysus standing with grapes in his hand.
Maroneia was the most prominent Greek colony in western Thrace, which prospered due to its highly developed port and resource rich territory. Though it was conquered by both Rome and the Kingdom of Macedon, the city remained a hub for commercial activity throughout ancient times, and is still a populated village in the modern day.
Wine produced in Maroneia was praised for having the “odor of nectar," and the mythological founder of the city was Maron, a priest of Apollo and son of Dionysus. Foundations dating back to the 4th century BC of a sanctuary to Dionysus can still be seen in the city today.
