These Russian 2 kopeck coins began circulation in 1810, shortly before Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion of Russia during the Napoleonic Wars. They feature a double headed eagle on the obverse, a symbol of the imperial court, and "2 KOPECKS" written in Cyrillic script on the reverse.
In 1812, around the time when these coins were struck, Napoleon Bonaparte famously invaded Russia as part of the Napoleonic Wars. While both armies were well prepared, France's Grand Armée was fighting far from home in a vaguely defined political war. Meanwhile, the Russian forces were fighting on behalf of their homeland, on their own soil, with a unified sense of national survival.
The Russians drew Napoleon’s forces deeper into Russia without ever engaging in a decisive battle, and eventually the harsh Russian winter forced them to retreat and incurred brutal losses—only about 1 in 6 of Napoleon's troops survived being sent over Russian borders.
Russia would go on to join the Sixth Coalition against France in 1813, and played a critical role in Napoleon’s eventual defeat. In 1814, Russia, along with allied armies entered Paris, marking the end of Napoleon’s empire.
