  • Notes: A legionary denarius is a modern name for a specific type of Roman silver coin that was minted during the time of the late Roman Republic. These coins were used to pay Roman soldiers, particularly legionaries, which were the heavy infantry of the Roman army. They were issued by Mark Antony in 32-31 BCE to fund his military campaigns, especially in preparation for the Battle of Actium, in which his fleet fought alongside Cleopatra's forces against Octavian (who would become the first emperor of Rome).
