Behind these certificates stood Léopold Mourier’s Parisian restaurant empire—a world of grand dining rooms, late-night cafés, jazz, and the electric nightlife of interwar Paris. A former chef at the Élysée Palace, Mourier became one of the Belle Époque’s leading restaurateurs and, in 1904, the first cook to receive the cross of the Legion of Honour. He later acquired or operated several celebrated establishments, including Fouquet’s, Le Pré Catelan, Café de Paris, and the Pavillon d’Armenonville.
After Mourier’s death in 1923, to honor his life’s work, his holdings were reorganized under his longtime associate, Louis Barraya, as Établissements Mourier, L. Barraya & Cie. The new company had capital of 3.3 million francs and continued operating prominent restaurants throughout the interwar years.
The set includes two complementary securities from this reorganized enterprise. The Part Bénéficiaire granted its holder rights to a share of the company’s profits but did not represent ownership of its capital. The Action au Porteur, by contrast, was one of 6,600 bearer shares valued at 500 francs each and included detachable dividend coupons.
Together, the pair preserves both sides of investing in Mourier’s restaurant empire, with direct connection to names like Fouquet’s and Le Pré Catelan that remain part of the Parisian dining scene today.
The stock certificates come with a rigid archival document holder for preservation and handling. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included.
NOTE: This certificate has no value as a financial asset, and will not be honored by any extant company today.
