  • Notes: The Geneva and Bishop's Bibles were two significant editions that followed the Great Bible of 1539, which was the first authorized English Bible. The Geneva Bible, favored by English Puritans who sought refuge in Geneva, Switzerland during the late 1500s, was noted for making scripture accessible in the common tongue. In contrast, the Bishop's editions of the Geneva Bibles were intended as pulpit Bibles for clergy use, primarily for sermons and study. This version was based on the Geneva Bible's base text translation, but major sections of it were delegated to current bishops for retranslation during its assembly. This approach led to inconsistencies, including incorrect and untranslated passages, making the Bishop's Bible largely an aesthetic piece rather than accessible scripture. The printing rights for these bibles were exclusively granted to the Barker family in London for over a century, part of efforts of the English Reformation to establish the legacy of the Anglican Church. The Bishop's and Geneva Bibles heavily influenced the early editions of the King James Bible, which eventually succeeded them in 1611.
