Item Description:

Includes glass top leatherette display box.

  • Origin: Egypt (Late Period)
  • Date: c. 664 - 332 BCE
  • Size: 37mm tall
  • Notes: Taweret was an ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth, fertility, and protection. Depicted with the body of a hippopotamus, lioness features, and a crocodile’s back, she embodied both danger and guardianship. Her image was common in homes, amulets, and ritual objects to safeguard mothers and infants, and her worship spread beyond Egypt into Nubia, Crete, and the Levant. This figure was made from a non-clay ceramic material known as "faience," which consists primarily of powdered quartz or sand, lime, soda, and mineral colorants. Blue hues signified the Nile, sky and rebirth, while green hues were symbolic of regeneration and the afterlife.
