These copper coins were minted in the founding year of the Republic of China, shortly after the Qing dynasty was overthrown in the Xinhai Revolution. The obverse features the flags of the Kuomintang and the Republic, while the reverse bears the denomination: ten cash.
The Xinhai Revolution, also known as the 1911 Revolution, was a political and social upheaval that ended over two thousand years of imperial rule in China and led to the founding of the Republic of China. Sparked by the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911, it quickly spread across the provinces as reformists, revolutionaries, and local military leaders turned against the Qing dynasty. The revolution was driven by frustration with corruption, foreign domination, and the failure of late Qing reforms. By early 1912, the last emperor, Puyi, had abdicated, marking the collapse of the Qing and the birth of a new republican government under Sun Yat-sen’s leadership—ushering in a new era in modern Chinese history.
