Item Description:

  • Origin: China, Qing dynasty or early Republic period (circa late 19th to early 20th century)
  • Date: c. 1850 - 1920 CE
  • Size: 2.8 x 2 inches
  • Notes: Chinese water droppers were tools used in the art of calligraphy and painting. These small vessels were used to control the flow of water onto inkstones, allowing scholars to grind ink to the perfect consistency. Over time, water droppers became a canvas for artistic expression, crafted in bronze, jade, and porcelain, and often shaped like animals, fruits, or auspicious symbols. Water droppers have two holes, one for water and one for air, and are designed so that only a small amount of water is able to drop at one time.
