Item Description:

  • Origin: China, Ming Dynasty
  • Date: 1368 - 1644 CE
  • Size: Each figure is approximately 8 inches tall
  • Notes: These finely modeled Ming dynasty tomb figures depict sedan chair bearers, attendants tasked with carrying a palanquin (covered chair) to provide transport for the deceased in the afterlife. Each figure is glazed in the classic sancai (“three-color”) palette of amber, green, and cream, a technique prized for its flowing, variegated surface effects. Created in the 15th to 16th centuries, such figures reflect both the artistic refinement of Ming funerary wares and the symbolic emphasis on rank, ceremony, and comfort beyond death.
