Item Description:

The four stock certificates in this collection were issued by Shri Ambica Mills and Lalbhai Tricumlal Mills between 1942 and 1947, two of the largest textile companies based in Ahmedabad during the final years of British rule in India. Ahmedabad became one of the country’s major textile manufacturing centers as dozens of mills turned locally grown cotton into yarn and cloth for domestic and international demand. The scale of production was so significant that British observers often compared the city to Manchester, England, then one of the world’s leading textile-producing cities.

These certificates represent financial investment in the historical economy of western India. Both companies raised capital through preference shares, offering investors a stake in a textile industry that remained vital during the Second World War and the years leading up to independence. The certificates still retain their Bombay Province revenue stamps, along with cancellation markings and registration holes from use.

The stock certificates come with rigid archival document holders for preservation and handling. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

NOTE: This certificate has no value as a financial asset, and will not be honored by any extant company today.
