  • Notes: After the Civil War, the federal government introduced a substantial tax on state bank notes. Louisiana cleverly avoided this tax by issuing bank notes that resembled bonds with interest coupons. These were known as $5 "Baby Bonds," named for the image of a baby engraved on them. People in Louisiana recognized their value as equivalent to official currency, and used them like regular bank notes. This authentic $5 Baby Bond includes a unique serial number and the facsimile signature of Ed Bunker, Louisiana's state treasurer.
