Item Description:

This collection includes five banknotes from major European colonies of the 20th century, during the last days of major European imperialism.

Beginning around 1760, the industrialized nations of Europe began to colonize the rest of the world. Great Britain was the most successful, with an empire so vast that the sun was said never to set on it. By the end of the 19th century, even declining European players like Portugal were acquiring territory: colonizing, influencing, annexing. The so-called "Scramble for Africa" saw the Europeans slice and dice the Dark Continent. Only at the end of the Great War in 1918 did imperialism begin to wane.

The notes included are:

  • Portuguese Guinea (Mozambique): 100 and 50 escudos, 1971
  • French Indochina (Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam): 1 piastre, 1953
  • German East Africa (Burundi, Rwanda, the Tanzania): 1 rupie, 1916
  • British Hong Kong (China): 1 cent, 1961-1995
