Item Description:

  • Title: 女大学 - The Great Learning for Women
  • Date: Late 1800s
  • Size: 10 x 7 inches
  • Condition: Fair - Significant wear to covers and some bug damage
  • Notes: The Onna Daigaku (女大学 or "The Great Learning for Women") is an 18th-century Japanese educational text advocating for neo-Confucian values in education, with the oldest existing version dating to 1729. It is frequently attributed to Japanese botanist and educator Kaibara Ekken.

Japanese books are read right to left (instead of left to right) and are bound on the right side, contrary to those in Western languages. The pages may be double layered, and care must be taken to ensure that they do not separate when flipping through. The book must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of bugs.
