Item Description:

Includes an archival grade document sleeve.

  • Origin: Confederate States of America
  • Date: 1861
  • Denomination: $50 bond
  • Mint: Printed by Douglas Engravers, New Orleans, Louisiana. Signed in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Size: 12.5 x 9.5 inches
  • Obverse: Vignette of commerce and agriculture
  • Notes: During the early stages of the Civil War, the Confederate States of America sold bonds to generate funds. At the time, many Southerners saw purchasing these bonds as both a sound financial move and a patriotic act, especially while the war appeared to be going in the Confederacy’s favor and the bonds offered appealing interest returns. However, when the war ended in defeat, those bonds became worthless, leaving their holders with nothing. In modern times, they have regained a significant portion of their value as collector's items.
