Item Description:

  • Origin: China, Ming dynasty
  • Date: c. 1400s - 1500s CE
  • Size: 2.1 inches wide, 2.0 inches tall
  • Notes: This Ming dynasty ceramic figure is glazed in the traditional sancai (“three-color”) palette of amber, green, and cream, a decorative technique prized for its luminous, flowing surface. Created in the 15th–16th centuries, sancai offerings were often placed in tombs to provide the deceased with attendants and comforts in the afterlife. They often depicted servants, officials, animals, or guardians, reflecting both the worldly status of the tomb’s occupant and the spiritual importance of ensuring a prosperous existence beyond death.
