Qing Dynasty, Blue Glazes Drum Shaped Brush Washer (Calligraphy)

Chinese calligraphy, revered as one of the highest art forms in Chinese culture, is built upon the mastery of the “Four Treasures of the Scholar’s Studio” (文房四寶): the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. Each tool plays a vital role in writing and expression. The brush (筆), often made of bamboo and animal hair, allows for variation in line and texture, responding sensitively to the artist’s hand. The ink (墨), traditionally made from soot and resin, is ground with water on the inkstone (硯) to create the desired density and sheen. Finally, paper (紙) captures brush strokes. Surrounding these core tools are complementary implements such as brush rests, seals, and water droppers. Measures approximately 2.5 inches tall. Please note that the glaze on this item has tested positive for lead.
