The New York Herald was a prominent newspaper based in New York City that was in circulation from 1835 to 1924. Founded by James Gordon Bennett Sr. in 1835, the newspaper quickly distinguished itself from its contemporaries by adopting a non-partisan stance, stating it would support no particular party or faction. By 1845, it had become the most popular and profitable daily newspaper in the United States. The paper's circulation reached 84,000 copies in 1861, making it the most widely circulated journal globally at the time. The Herald was known for its sensationalist approach, with Bennett Sr. stating that a newspaper's role was more to "startle and amuse" than to instruct. The paper played a significant role during the American Civil War, supporting the Democratic Party. In 1867, control of the paper was handed over to James Gordon Bennett Jr., who continued its legacy, including financing expeditions like Henry Morton Stanley's journey to find David Livingstone in Africa. The paper's journey came to an end in 1924 when it was acquired by its smaller competitor, the New-York Tribune, resulting in the formation of the New York Herald Tribune.
