Item Description:

  • Origin: China, Ming Dynasty
  • Date: c. 1400s CE
  • Size: 2.5 x 2.25 inches
  • Notes: Jun ware first appeared in the Northern Song dynasty and quickly became one of China’s most admired ceramics. Made in Henan province, these pieces are known for their thick, glassy glazes that shift between soft blues, lavenders, and purples. The striking red or violet splashes that sometimes appear are caused by copper in the glaze reacting to the kiln’s heat, giving each piece its own personality. Jun ware was often made into simple, sturdy shapes such as bowls and flowerpots, but the unpredictable glaze made them anything but ordinary.
