Ancient Lead Sling Bullet (Glandes Plumbeae)

The sling was one of the most deadly ranged weapons of the ancient world, despite being often overshadowed by swords, spears, and bows. This deceptively simple device launched projectiles with astonishing speed and force that could shatter bones, rip through shields, and inflict devastating injuries. Early slings hurled stones or baked clay, but by the 5th century BCE Greek and Roman armies had adopted these cast lead ammunition known as glandes plumbeae or "lead acorns," named for their distinctive almond- or acorn-shaped form. Smaller, denser, and more aerodynamic than stone, these lead bullets exceeded speeds of 62 mph, with some expert estimates approaching 100 mph.

Some surviving lead bullets also revealed a form of ancient psychological warfare. Archaeologists uncovered glandes with inscriptions meant to intimidate or mock their opponents, "Take this!" (Accipe hoc!) or "Ouch!" (Dexai! in Greek). Others invoked divine assistance featuring symbols like thunderbolts to represent the might of Zeus or Jupiter. Even writers of the time praised the sling's power; historian Procopius claimed it could outrange the Hun bow, while poets fancifully wrote that its lead bullets became so hot in flight they melted through the air. Though fanciful exaggeration, such accounts reflect the weapon's fearsome reputation.

Its most famous appearance is the biblical story of David and Goliath, in which the young shepherd, David, felled a heavily armored giant with a single well-placed stone. Because slings were inexpensive, easy to make, and commonly carried by shepherds, they became a practical weapon for militias throughout the ancient Near East, and continued to be used in some capacities well into the medieval period. Today, the glandes plumbeae and the sling remain a symbol of skill and precision, with modern enthusiasts and historians reviving interest in this ancient weapon.
