Origin: These one-sided silver coins come from the Kingdom of Cambodia, and were minted in 1847 CE. Despite looking much older, these are actually modern coins struck using traditional methods.
Depicted on these coins is the hamsa (Sanskrit: हंस), an aquatic bird referred to in ancient Sanskrit texts. The bird is widely recognized as being a swan, though various scholars have also interpreted it as being a goose or even a flamingo. The hamsa is said to be the vahana (or "vehicle") of the dieties Brahma, Gayatri, Saraswati, and Vishvakarma.
The depiction of a hamsa on a Cambodian coin is a result of the absorption of Hindu traditions into Cambodian culture during the time of the Khmer Empire in the 9th to 15th centuries CE.
