Origin: These copper denaro coins are from the Kingdom of Sicily, a state that controlled the bottom half of the Italian peninsula as well as the island of Sicily from 1130 to 1816. The coins date within the reign of Manfred, King of Sicily (1258 - 1266 AD), who was the last ruler of the Hohenstaufen dynasty to control the kingdom.

Manfred endured a very rough eight years on the throne. Even before becoming king, he struck up a bloody conflict against the Catholic church. As a result he was excommunicated by three successive popes, and angered the church to the point where he was the target of a Crusade in 1255. Manfred met his end when he was killed in battle against papal forces in 1266.
