Notes: In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Swiss cantons formed a loose confederation known as the Old Swiss Confederacy, rather than a unified nation. Each canton governed itself independently, with significant differences in religion—some were Catholic while others followed Protestantism after the Reformation. Despite internal tensions and occasional conflicts, the cantons maintained a degree of cooperation for mutual defense and economic stability until the confederation was transformed by the French invasion of Switzerland at the end of the 18th century.
