Nicknamed "bookmark money," these hansatsu are the earliest forms of Japanese paper money. They were issued by many private groups, often individual clans, and usually redeemable for gold, silver, or copper. Hundreds of designs exist, and the notes feature a wide range of animals and deities. Most frequently seen are the seven gods of fortune: Ebisu, Daikoku, Bishamon, Benten, Fukurokuju, Jurojin, and Hotei.
