• Notes: Vaballathus was emperor of the Palmyrene Empire, a short lived Roman breakaway state centered in Palmyra, Syria. His mother Zenobia led a rebellion against the Roman Empire, and for a time Vaballathus' rule was recognized as legitimate by the Roman emperor Aurelian—leading to the striking of coins with dual portraits such as this one. However, this peace was short lived, and Palmyra was retaken by Rome in 272 CE. The final fate of Vaballathus and his mother remains uncertain.
