The Black Hand (also known as Unification or Death) was a Serbian secret society allegedly responsible for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, commonly considered to be the spark that ignited the First World War. The organization sought to break free from the Hapsburg monarchy and unite all the South Slavic states not already ruled by Serbia or Montenegro.
The assassination of the archduke, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, occurred on June 28th, 1914 in Sarajevo. A cohort of six assassins, coordinated by a member of the Black Hand, attacked the archduke's motorcade in the street as he drove to meet the city's mayor. After a failed bombing attempt, the assassins successfully approached Franz's vehicle on his return journey—shooting both him and his wife at point blank range.
This coin is a silver Serbian dinar that circulated during the Great War following the archduke's assassination. It features a portrait of King Peter I, who ruled as King of Serbia from 1903 to 1918 and later ruled Yugoslavia after the war.
