  • Obverse: REPUBLICA MEXICANA 1872 (Mexican Republic) - National arms; eagle with snake in beak standing on cactus in the middle of lake. With legend at top and oak and laurel wreath at bottom.
  • Reverse: LIBERTAD LEY UN PESO (Liberty Law 1 Peso) - Scales of justice with radiant liberty cap at top, and law scroll below crossed by sword. With value, mint, assayer's initial and fineness at bottom.
  • Notes: Spanish 8 reales and similar silver dollars were a favored currency around the world during the 18th and 19th centuries, due to their high silver content. This coin has chopmarks stamped onto it, which were made by merchants in Asia who wanted to test the purity of the silver.
