The New-York Tribune, later known as the New York Tribune, was an influential American newspaper established in 1841 by editor Horace Greeley. Initially bearing the title "New-York Daily Tribune" from 1842 to 1866, it reverted to its original name thereafter. Throughout the 1840s and 1860s, the Tribune played a pivotal role, first representing the American Whig Party and subsequently the Republican Party. With a circulation reaching approximately 200,000 in the 1850s, it became the largest daily paper in New York City. The Tribune was renowned for its editorials, which were widely circulated and replicated in other city newspapers, significantly influencing national opinion. The newspaper was a pioneer in covering the American Civil War, dispatching reporters, correspondents, and illustrators to document the conflict. The Tribune continued its publication as an independent daily until 1924, at which point it merged with the New York Herald to form the New York Herald Tribune, which remained in circulation until 1966.
