The New York Times (NYT) is a renowned daily newspaper based in New York City, and is still being published today. Founded on September 18, 1851, as the New-York Daily Times, its early years were marked by significant events related to the Civil War. On April 21, 1861, The New York Times began publishing a Sunday edition to provide daily coverage of the Civil War. During the New York City draft riots in July 1863, which were instigated by the introduction of a draft for the Union Army, the main office of The New York Times was attacked. Co-founder Henry Raymond defended the office using Gatling guns, one of which he operated himself. The rioters then targeted the headquarters of the abolitionist publisher Horace Greeley's New York Tribune. In 1869, following the death of Henry Raymond, George Jones assumed the role of publisher.
