Daily Evening Union Newspaper

 These are original issues of the Daily Evening Union, a newspaper active in Newburyport, Massachusetts during the 1850's and published by William H. Huse & Co. Each one is 4 pages long and contains world news, local news, and antique advertisements.

These newspapers were published during the buildup to the American Civil War. The 1850's was a decade of rising tensions and political battles, mainly over the central issue of slavery. The U.S. annexed new territory following the Mexican American War, leading to disagreements over the balance of free and slave states. Meanwhile, the infamous Dred Scott Decision and the raid at Harper's Ferry by abolitionist John Brown inflamed tensions further. All this and more would eventually boil over when the Civil War officially began in 1861.

Each newspaper comes in an archival sleeve for proper storage. It must be handled with care as 150 year old paper is very fragile. These papers may have some repaired portions, but all repairs have been made with extra thin archival grade document tape.
