This three-coin collection brings together genuine, well-circulated examples of the Roman Empire’s most widely used denominations: a silver denarius, a debased antoninianus, and a late bronze nummus. Spanning the height, crisis years, and final centuries of Roman rule, these coins would have been used by the everyday Roman commoner and are a living example of the empire's economic story.
The denarius was the backbone of Rome’s economy for nearly 450 years, a small silver coin typically bearing the portrait of the reigning emperor and symbolic imagery on the reverse. In the 3rd century it was gradually displaced by the antoninianus, introduced under Emperor Caracalla as a higher-value piece but struck with far less silver—an early step in the inflation that shook the empire during its turbulent middle years. By the 4th century, as precious metals grew scarce, everyday commerce relied on the small bronze nummus, the practical coin of Rome’s later world, which was sometimes plated in silver but had a much lower value overall.
Together, these three coins depict the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, seen through the everyday currency that passed through an ordinary citizen’s hands.
