These advertisement tokens were produced under Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper from approximately 1849-1860. Many pennies and halfpennies from the 19th century sport counterstamps from this publication. In 1842, British publisher Edward Lloyd launched Lloyd's Illustrated London Newspaper, priced at two pence, undercutting its main competitor. To avoid stamp duty, it was initially published illegally, but after seven weeks, it was relaunched as Lloyd's Weekly London at threepence to comply with the law. It became a pioneer in Britain's mass-market newspapers. By 1849, it was renamed Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper, indicating the earliest date for these tokens.
