These zinc 10 Reichspfennig coins were issued during the Allied occupation of Germany following the end of World War II. They retain the same eagle and denomination design seen on wartime issues, with one key difference: the swastika, typically found beneath the eagle’s talons, has been removed.
The Reichsmark was the official currency of Nazi Germany, with one Reichspfennig equal to 1/100 of a Reichsmark. Before the war intensified, Reichspfennig coins were typically struck in bronze, but metal shortages soon led to a switch to cheaper zinc. Higher-denomination silver Reichsmark coins were also withdrawn, replaced by paper currency.
After the war, Reichsmarks continued to circulate alongside Allied-issued occupation currency. The system was finally abolished in 1948 with the introduction of the Deutsche Mark.
