This is a page from a German language Bible printed by Christopher Sauer II in 1776. He was the son of Christopher Sauer, who in 1743 printed the first European language Bible in North America in Germantown, Pennsylvania.
The 1776 edition books became known as "Gun Wad" Bibles after the British invasion of Germantown. The invading troops destroyed most of the three thousand copies that were printed and used the paper to make gun cartridges, as well as litter for their horses.
It is unknown if this specific page came from a Bible destroyed during this time, but it is certainly a possibility! Intact Sauer Bibles sell for thousands of dollars, so it is unlikely that this book was deliberately destroyed to sell the individual pages.
Measures about 8 inches by 9.75 inches. A color scan of the book's cover page accompanies this item.
