Each unique seal includes a hardened clay impression to show what the stamped design would look like (the grey pieces in the photos above).

Origin: These Ottoman bronze seals date back to the later period of the empire, from around the 17th to 19th century CE. Each features a uniquely carved design in Ottoman Turkish or Arabic, which would have served as the personal monogram of a business or individual.

These seals were most often used as a type of signature on official documentation. They would be imprinted onto hot wax or clay in order to create an impression, which would be a unique mark of the owner. Seals were also used to mark the ownership of property, such as land or buildings, and acted as a way to authenticate legal documents. The Ottomans placed great importance on the design and craftsmanship of their seals, and many examples are highly decorative and feature intricate calligraphy and ornamental motifs.

Each seal is about 1 inch in height, although this varies slightly. This group of seals originated from a German auction house, after which it was sold to an antiquities dealer in Denmark who we acquired them from.

A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies all items purchased at History Hoard.
