Having emerged victorious from the Hundred Years’ War, France began rebuilding itself from long term instability. This era, known as the Old Regime, was the socio-political era of hereditary monarchy, and the privileged class of the French nobility. Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, whose 72 year and 110 day reign is the longest, verifiable reign of any sovereign in history. Despite attempts for reform and centralization, France’s political and administrative centers remained scattered across the country, and the French nobility struggled to maintain their place of power.
The French Wars of Religion, a period of fighting between the French Catholic church and the newly introduced ideas of Protestantism challenged the power and legitimacy of the Catholic Church.
