Origin: This glass token dates from the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE, and originates from an ancient Greek kingdom in the Middle East known as Greco-Bactria.
Tokens such as these were meticulously molded into the forms of both human and animal heads. While the exact purpose of these tokens remains a subject of scholarly debate, it has been suggested that they could have been used as theater tickets, tokens for admission to public events, or as tokens for the distribution of goods.
The idea of these tokens being used as tickets is speculative, with most evidence coming from anecdotal accounts or interpretations of archaeological finds. It's theorized that the glass tokens would be broken in half upon admission, similar to ripping a paper ticket today.
This token has been carefully reassembled from fragments, restoring it to a mostly intact state. It was originally acquired by a collector in Denmark during the 1980s.
