Publication Year: Meiji 34 (1901)
Publisher: Ministry of Education (文部省)
Description: This is geography book written for Japanese primary school students. It features multiple maps, some of them multi-panel foldouts, and illustrations of foreign people and buildings.
The book was printed during the Meiji era, a period marked by Japan's rapid modernization as it joined the world stage after centuries of near total isolation. Many of the illustrations in books from this era feature Japanese people in western style clothing, which was a significant change compared to the previous Edo period.
Condition: Good. Cover and binding are strong, ink is still dark and pages are in great condition.
Care Instructions: Japanese books are read right to left (instead of left to right) and are bound on the right side, contrary to those in Western languages. The pages may be double layered, and care must be taken to ensure that they do not separate when flipping through. The book must be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of bugs.
