The Republic of Lucca was a medieval state centered on the city of Lucca in the Tuscany region of central Italy. Italian city states were essential to supplying the ongoing crusades at the time, as well as crusader states established in the Middle East like the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Lucca would grow to become the third largest Italian city state to remain independent under a republican constitution, after Venice and Genoa.

The Holy Roman Emperors Henry III, IV, and V (or "Enrico" in Italian) ruled around the start of the Crusades, a series of religious wars endorsed by the Latin Church to reclaim the Holy Land from Islamic rule. Pope Urban II proclaimed the First Crusade under Henry IV's rule in 1095.
