These silver deniers were used by early crusaders during the Crusades, a series of religious wars which saw Europe attempt to gain control of the Holy Land. The coins were issued by the Bishops of Valence (a diocese of the Latin Church in southern France), and circulated in the short-lived European feudal states of the Levant.
