Alexander of Brandenburg-Bayreuth was the last margrave of the two Franconian principalities, Bayreuth and Ansbach. He became Crown Prince of the principality after the death of his elder brother Carl Frederick August. He became Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach in 1757 and in 1769 he acquired the principality of Bayreuth. He was known for his business ventures such as starting a porcelain factory in Ansbach, importing sheep and founding his own bank. He also hired auxiliary troops to King George III of Great Britain for the American Revolutionary War. Alexander sold his Margraviate to Prussia in 1791 and retired to England where he dedicated himself to breeding horses.
