Item Description:

These silver pfennig coins come from the Duchy of Carinthia, a state of the Holy Roman Empire located mostly in modern day Austria. They date between 1426 and 1441, during Johann II von Reisberg's time as the Archbishop of Salzburg.

These one sided coins are slightly domed, and show the coat of arms of Salzburg (a decorated shield within a circle).

The Duchy of Carinthia had a complicated history that spanned almost 1,000 years, from its founding in 976 CE to the formation of the First Austrian Republic in 1918. Though technically under the control of the Holy Roman Empire, in reality states in this position were mostly independent. The primary ruler was actually the famous Hapsburg dynasty, which controlled Carinthia for most of its history.
