Origin: These copper pieces were struck from 1785 to 1788 under the Articles of Confederationafter the American Revolution but before Connecticut ratified the new Constitution and became the fifth state. Meant to emulate the British halfpenny, these coppers were issued to address coin shortages in the newly independent state.

During this period, the newly freed colonies were ruled under a precursor to the Constitution known as the Articles of Confederation. Because of the government's weak ability to produce money under the Articles, many states issued their own coins and bills during this period—Connecticut included. The state began minting it's own copper coins in 1785.

However, the stronger Constitution that we know today was ratified by the state just three years later in 1788. Federal laws quickly put an end to state-minted coinage, making the coins struck during this transition period highly collectible today.

Connecticut coppers from History Hoard are a great way to get one of these rare pieces without breaking the bank. Although they are well worn, their unique histories are undeniable. Each has been thoroughly inspected and is guaranteed genuine, with a signed Certificate of Authenticity included.

Actually, many relics are able to be owned by anyone.

Typically, museums only want to display items that are either very rare or incredibly well preserved. This leaves many items that don't make the cut, and these are able to be owned by individuals.

While the items we sell aren't "museum grade," they still carry with them the same amount of history and uniqueness. Each relic was still hand made by a person, hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

One of our core values is not to damage or alter any of the artifacts we sell.

History needs to be preserved—after all, there is a limited amount of it that survives—but it is also something to be shared with the masses. For this reason, we put our relics in sturdy display cases that are safe to handle, but are mindful that someday the relic may need to be taken out again.

No glue or resin holds the items in place. Instead, we're developed our own method for holding the relics securely in their displays using pressure alone. In fact, any of our relics can be removed in their original condition by simply opening the display case.
